Homemade Ketchup

Shawn has been following the ketogenic diet since the second week in January. He’s not the type that goes into anything with a blind eye…the man does his research and when he commits he COMMITS. lol part of the reason I trust him so much 🙂

So the ketogenic diet consists of eating 70-80% of your calories from fat everyday. That’s a LOT of fat but there’s purpose behind it too. Most of the time our bodies use glycogen as a fuel source but with this particular way of eating, it forces your body to use fat as a fuel source. It takes a little time for your body to become efficient at this and a lot of people go through a “keto flu” where they actually get sick when they kick ALL the junk outta their diet. It’s not just about eating fat, it’s about eating HEALTHY fats, ridding your body of processed junk, focusing on proteins, veggies (but not starchy ones), and minimal fruit (berries). Shawn didn’t get sick (praise God) but he was really fatigued. This is JUST the tip of the iceburg…go read up on it. A lot of people are able to kick autoimmune disorders to the curb by focusing on this type of eating. SO INTERESTING…I’m a nerd…. there, I said it lol

All of that to say…because of this choice he’s made, it’s bringing a TON of inspiration into the kitchen. Some of that inspiration is Shawn being in there with me, which I love! It also teaches me that I have some quirks when it comes to cooking lol #imnotperfect hahaha!

Because he’s not eating sugar, we buy erythritol powder and stevia which are natural sugar substitutes. This recipe calls for the erythritol but you could use sugar or honey if you’d prefer. His sister knew he was gonna be doing this diet thang so she blessed him/us with this cookbook and we cook from it ALL the time! Check it out: The Ketogenic Cookbook.

This is my first time making my own ketchup and it will NOT be my last because I love it!

Here’s what I did:

1 1/2 cups beef bone broth (could you beef or chicken stock/broth or water)

1 small can of tomato paste

2 tbsp of apple cider vinegar

1 tbsp of powdered erythritol (or honey or sweetener of choice but may wanna reduce the amount a little)

1 tsp garlic powder

1 tsp onion powder

1 tsp fine sea salt

-Combine all the ingredients in a medium-sized pot and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low and simmer for about 45 minutes.

It should keep in the fridge for a couple weeks if stored in an air tight container. BOOM!
